What It takes to Succeed in Recruitment
Recruitment is a fantastic business to get into. The role of a recruitment consultant is challenging, occasionally heartbreaking and extremely rewarding, sometimes all in the same week. The mix of emotions a recruiter will go through in their career is astonishing. It doesn’t matter what industry of recruitment you work in, be it the food manufacturing industry to rec to rec recruitment every consultant will experience the highs and the lows of the role.
This makes me wonder why we put ourselves through all of the stress and the heartache. Why do we not get a different sales role that doesn’t drive us insane? The answer is clear, we love what we do. Although some days we may curse and swear and leave the office wishing we never got up, we simply love recruitment and embrace the challenge we have every single day we wake up.
So now I will touch on the title of this blog… what it takes to succeed in recruitment. Well to begin with it takes determination. If you are not a tenacious, determined and hard working character recruitment will eat you alive. You have to be able to recover on from the disappointments quickly and use them as a springboard for the next position you are working on. Resilient, thick skinned and professional are also traits required to be a successful consultant.
A fun fact to know is that only a minority of people who start in the recruitment industry are still there after 2 years, the rest move on to find alternate careers. This is merely down to the fact that recruitment can and will wear you down, and if you have a bad few months it can greatly affect you’re not only your figures and personal billing targets, but also your morale.
In conclusion, there are not a lot of pros for working in recruitment and it takes a special type of character to be successful in it, however for many others and for me personally we wouldn’t change it for the world.
