Do I need to use a cover letter?
I once asked the question “do I really need to use a cover letter?” to a recruiter once and they said they can’t remember the last time the looks through one. From there point of view they have so many applicants to get through they go straight for the CV and if they have any questions they will speak to the candidate. Hiring managers however are different they will read what is written and then the CV to make a formal decision however they too are getting to a stage where there are so many applications for a job time is precious.
Some say that a covering letter is the most important tool used to grab the attention of the employer and that it should be tailored to each job you apply for. Not sending one can be considered lazy, and in some instances rude! It is however essential if you do create one that you:
Get a friend to look over it (ideally someone who has daily contact with Cover letters)
Ensure the spelling and grammar are correct.
Make sure it is tailored to the job you are applying for.
